Understanding Repair Timelines: What to Expect After an Accident
When you make a claim with MPI, the time it takes to repair your vehicle depends on several factors including the complexity of the damage, parts availability, and how busy the repair shop is. Here’s a breakdown of the typical timeline and key things that can affect how long your vehicle will be in the shop:
Initial Estimate & Assessment
After you report the claim, an estimator will inspect your vehicle. If your claim is eligible for direct repair, we are able to estimate your claim right here at Penner Auto Body.
The estimator prepares a damage report and determines which repairs are needed.
If there’s hidden damage discovered during teardown, a “supplement” to the estimate may be submitted for MPI approval.
Repair Phase
Once you authorize repairs, you’ll book your vehicle in. It can often take a couple of months before your repair date.
The repair time depends heavily on parts availability. If parts are back-ordered, that can delay the process. We do our very best to have all the original parts here at the time of your repairs.
Once the vehicle is here for repairs, we start teardown. Sometimes, we might find additional damage that couldn’t be seen during the original estimate before taking the vehicle apart. In that situation, we must get approval from MPI for the additional work and parts, which can cause delays. We do our very best to keep you updated during that process.
What Can Make Repairs Take Longer
High demand / backlog: Collision repair shops may take longer when there’s a surge in claims (for example, after big hail storms).
Parts delays: Waiting for hard-to-get or specialty parts slows everything down.
Complex work: Structural damage or advanced driver-assist system work may require more time.
