FAQs
Auto Body FAQ’s
Can I get a rental car while my vehicle is being repaired?
We partner with Enterprise to provide convenient rental vehicles for our customers with Loss of Use Coverage. When scheduling your repair appointment, simply let us know that you require a rental, and we will arrange it on your behalf. On the day you drop off your vehicle for repairs, an Enterprise representative will meet you at our facility to pick you up and ensure you are set up with a rental vehicle promptly.
What is the difference between an ‘Accredited Shop’ and a regular repair shop?
Accredited shops meet repair standards and have the right tooling, equipment, and training to complete proper and safe repairs for your passenger car or truck. Penner Auto Body is proud to be an MPI Accredited Direct Repair shop.
Are you a Direct Repair Shop?
Yes, we are a direct repair shop. This means we work directly with MPI to streamline the claims and repair process, ensuring your vehicle is repaired efficiently and to the highest standards.
What happens if my vehicle is a total loss?
In the event that your vehicle is deemed a total loss by MPI or your insurance company, we will guide you through the process of settlement and offer guidance in finding a new vehicle.
What is betterment?
Insurance covers returning your vehicle to its pre-accident condition, not improving it. If the repair results in an upgrade, the customer shares the cost of that improvement.
Common Examples of Betterment with MPI:
Replacing worn tires with brand-new ones
Installing a new battery when the original was near the end of its life
Replacing suspension or mechanical components that were already heavily worn
Any repair where the new part significantly improves the vehicle's value or longevity
Who do I pay my deductible to?
Your deductible is payable to our shop when you pick up your vehicle after the repairs are completed. We handle all claim submissions directly with MPI, and the deductible represents the portion of the repair costs that you are responsible for under your insurance policy.
Mechanical FAQ’s
Do you offer Mechanical Services?
We offer full mechanical services. Our mechanical department is staffed by two expert technicians with over 20 years of experience, ensuring your vehicle receives high-quality, reliable care. Whether it’s collision-related mechanical work or general repairs, we have the expertise to get the job done right.
When and why should I retorque my wheels?
You should retorque your wheels to prevent the lug nuts from loosening after installation. Driving causes the wheel to settle, which can reduce clamping force and lead to vibration, damage, or even the wheel coming off.
When to retorque:
After 75 - 100 km of driving
Any time a wheel is removed and reinstalled
If you feel vibrations or hear clicking
How often should I get my vehicle’s oil changed?
Conventional (regular) oil:
We recommend changing it every 5,000 km or every 6 months, depending on your driving habits and conditions.
Full synthetic oil:
We recommend changing it around 7,000 - 10,000 km or every 6 - 8 months. Synthetic oil lasts longer because it resists heat, breakdown, and sludge much better than conventional oil.
Always refer to your vehicle’s owner’s manual for the exact interval, as requirements vary by engine and driving style.
What is the ideal tire pressure for my vehicle?
Tire pressure should always follow your vehicle manufacturer’s specification (usually 30-36 PSI for most cars, SUVs, and light trucks). Winnipeg’s climate means you may need slight seasonal adjustments:
Summer in Winnipeg:
Most vehicles run best at 32-35 PSI.
Heat increases pressure, so check and adjust your tires monthly.
Winter in Winnipeg:
Start at your manufacturer’s recommended pressure (usually 32-36 PSI).
Extreme cold can drop pressure by several PSI, so many drivers end up adding 2-4 PSI, keeping tires around 34-38 PSI depending on the vehicle.
Check pressure every 2-3 weeks during deep cold snaps.
Maintaining proper tire pressure improves traction, fuel economy, and tire life year-round.
